Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam

Sri Venkateshwara Swamy temple, Tirumala Hills, Andhra Pradesh

The Lord of the Seven Hills. The single most visited shrine in India and one of the wealthiest temples in the world. The deity here is Venkateshwara, also called Balaji, Srinivasa, and Govinda. The temple is a Divya Desam, sung by the Alvars, and central to the Sri Vaishnava tradition.

Sthala-purana

The sthala-purana of Tirumala is woven from the Varaha Purana, the Bhavishyottara Purana, and the Venkatachala Mahatmya. The hills themselves are considered the body of Adi Sesha, the thousand-hooded serpent on whom Vishnu rests. Lord Vishnu is said to have descended to Tirumala to wait out the Kali Yuga, taking on debts to Kubera for his marriage to Padmavati at nearby Tiruchanur, and accepting offerings from devotees as repayment until the end of the age. The hundi at Tirupati, into which devotees place their hundis of gold and money, carries this meaning. You are not paying for darshan. You are helping the Lord settle his debt.

  • Parivara devatas: Sri Varahaswamy temple (the older shrine, traditionally visited first), Sri Bedi Anjaneya Swamy, Sri Garuda Alvar

Lineage and tradition

Tirumala is central to the Sri Vaishnava sampradaya, in both its Vadakalai (northern, Sanskrit-leaning) and Tenkalai (southern, Tamil-leaning) lineages. The temple has historically been administered by both. The Pancharatra Agama tradition governs the daily worship pattern. Smartha and Madhva devotees also visit in large numbers, and the temple is widely revered across all Hindu sampradayas. Many families across Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh consider Tirumala their kuladevata sthana even when they have a more regional family deity.
